Today we had a special guy. he made a demonstration on ice-carving. It was for the cooks initially but only we had a freezer big enough so we — butchers got a chance to watch. it's freaking unbelievable. The cooking teacher ordered an ice block with a size of about 150/40/50 cm. Later it turned out that this particular block of ice was not ideal for sculpting because it's not perfectly transparent. Anyway, the master ice-carver (I'll call him Ross from now on, for short) put this huge block of ice in the back room of our lab and asked the chef what sculpture she wants. The school was preparing for a huge gala the following day so she went with: Salmon with a torch.
An order that would throw any ordinary artist into utter confusion didn't seem to bother Ross. Ten seconds later he was scraping something with an awl-looking tool. Next thing you know, he takes the ice saw and starts cutting this huge piece of solid H2O, little by little, you start seeing the shape of a fish, then fins appear, a conical torch. It is indeed like Michelangelo said. It was as if Ross's hand just broke the spell to free the fish slumbering in the stone. You watch his work and can't believe your eyes: out of nothing beauty emerges.
A little bit over one hour of work and a masterpiece was ready. Unfortunately I couldn't take a picture of it but trust me, it's awesome.
Ross kindly gave us his phone to look at thousands!!! of his works. Of all kinds of materials. Ice, fruit, cheese, chocolate, lard, wood and so on. Pumpkins of course.
Here are some of Ross's other works.

When you see people like this, you realize how much you wish you were able to create something at least half this beautiful. But you can't. And it sucks.
